Virtual tour: Znamenskaya Church. Znamenskaya Church (also the Church of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos) is an Orthodox church located on the territory of the Znamensky Monastery in the Right Bank District of the city of Irkutsk, on Angarskaya Street, at the confluence of the Ushakovka River and Angara. The main cathedral of the Irkutsk and Angara Diocese (since 1991). One of the oldest Orthodox churches in Irkutsk.
In 1757, at the expense of the Irkutsk merchant Ivan Bichevin, on the territory of the Znamensky Monastery, a stone Znamenskaya Church was founded. In 1882, the interior of the church was altered by the project of the architect V. A. Kudelsky
On July 17, 1934, the church was closed, all the buildings of the monastery were transferred to the Irkutsk hydroport.
In 1945, individual buildings of the monastery, including the Church of the Sign, were returned to believers.
Since 1990, the relics of St. Innocent of Irkutsk have been buried in the church.
