Tallinn 11 vana-turgi

by Igor Teterin

The market located on the square is one of the oldest markets in Tallinn, only the market on the Town Hall Square was older than it. In former times, the square was one of the city centers, which is also evidenced by the preserved structure of medieval streets - it can be seen that five roads flow into the square. In the Middle Ages, these were the beginnings of the five main routes of Estonia - to the city citadel (Vyshgorod), to the port, through Pärnu to Riga, through Tartu to Pskov and through Narva to Novgorod. Foreign merchants traded at the market, trade began to develop especially actively with the appearance in 1346 near Tallinn, as a Hanseatic city, of warehouse law (German: Stapelrecht). The order of the Hanseatic League dated February 22, 1346 established a ban on the merchants of the Hansa to directly import goods to Novgorod. It was necessary to use the harbors of Tallinn, Pärnu or Riga, where goods were reloaded from ships and transported further along land high roads or rivers. As a result, many Hanseatic merchants moved to Tallinn, opening representative offices of trade offices and partnerships. (Wikipedia)
