Mamayev Kurgan is the most famous memorial complex in Russia, dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad. It is located in the central part of Volgograd, on the right bank of the Volga. Then go to the Square of Fallen Fighters. Here you will find the Eternal Flame, Post No. 1 and an old poplar that survived the Battle of Stalingrad. In autumn, winter and spring, schoolchildren are on duty at the square from 10:00 to 14:00. The guard changes every 20 minutes. And on the ceiling above the ribbon, there are eighteen images of orders and medals of the Great Patriotic War. Along the walls, there is a spiral ramp that leads to the Square of Sorrow. In the ceiling of the Hall, above the Eternal Flame torch, there is a large round hole, the diameter of which is 11 meters. If you look at a certain angle, you can see the "Motherland" through this opening. In the Hall of Military Glory, a melody from the work "Dreams" by R. Schumann plays. The scale of Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd is truly impressive. For example, the total area of the complex is 26 hectares, and the length of the retaining walls, which are the boundaries of the huge burial, is more than 1,300 meters. The main dominant on Mamayev Kurgan is the sculpture "Motherland". Its height from the foot to the tip of the sword is 85 meters. At the time of completion of construction in 1967, the statue was considered the tallest in the world. Today, the sculpture ranks eleventh in the ranking of similar structures. From the foot of Mamayev Kurgan to its highest point, there are exactly 200 of them. This number is not accidental: the number of steps was designed in honor of the Battle of Stalingrad, because the fighting for the city lasted exactly 200 days.
