by Олег Александров

In the center of Khabarovsk is the largest and most beautiful main square named after V. I. Lenin. At this place, when Khabarovsk was founded, there was taiga.

Over time, the forest was cut down, and a wasteland was formed. Later the wasteland was cleared. In the years 1860-1880, there was a city cemetery on the site of the square. The city grew, its borders moved apart, and the cemetery was closed. The place was convenient for the square. She was named Nikolaev in honor of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, construction of a real school began on the territory of the square and a post and telegraph office was built. In 1917, the square was renamed Freedom Square. People’s meetings were held here, Red Guard detachments went from here to the front.

In 1925, a monument to VI Lenin was erected on the square, the opening of which took place on November 7. The author of the monument is the famous Soviet sculptor M. Manizer. The height of the figure of Lenin is 4.5 arshina (3.2 meters).

In 1929, five soldiers of the Special Far Eastern Red Banner Army, who died in the battles of Lachasu on October 12, 1929, were buried on Freedom Square.

From the 1930s until World War II, the area was not reconstructed. During the years of repression (1937–1938), the square became known as the square named after Stalin and bore that name until 1957.

Special attention was paid to the improvement and reconstruction of the square in the early 1950s. A lot of work in its reconstruction was put by the architect E.D. Mameshin. New buildings appear on the square, a monument to Vladimir Lenin was moved from its center to the building of the third city hospital. And in 1957 the square received the name of the name of V. I. Lenin.

In size (5.6 hectares) it is one of the largest areas in Russia.

On May 9, 1945, the Lenin Square was filled with jubilant residents who gathered at a huge festive rally dedicated to the Great Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, and on September 3, over imperial Japan.

The area continued to transform, and the most significant changes occurred in recent decades.

Anniversary dates of the 60th anniversary of the Khabarovsk Territory and the 140th anniversary of Khabarovsk were near. In 1989, a competition was announced for the reconstruction of the square. It was attended by leading architects of the city. According to the winning project of A.Ye. Mamshin, its reconstruction began, and in the fall of 1998, the Khabarovsk residents received an excellent area. She has become more elegant and beautiful.

Transparent jets of large and small fountains sparkling in the sun, beating high in the sky, give it a special charm, and in the summer it pleases the citizens with the multicolor of their flower beds.  Source: http://www.dvhab.ru/city/sights / Area + im. + Lenina + Khabarovsk
