Construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in 1873. It was erected on the site where two previous churches were located (a wooden one named after the Archangel Michael, according to legend, burned down after a lightning strike, and a stone one in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built by decree of Peter I after the victory in the Battle of Poltava). By 1883, a five-altar church was built; the chapels are consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Transfiguration of the Lord, in the name of St. Nicholas, the Archangel Michael, the central altar of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.
