House of Soviets

The architectural idea of the House of Soviets was borrowed by the architect (Schwartzbreim Julian Lvovich) from the Brazilians from the building of the Brazilian National Congress. The construction of which began in 1970.

It is believed that the House of Soviets was built on the site of Königsberg Castle. In fact, it stands east of the former moat of the castle.

To celebrate the 750th anniversary of Kaliningrad in 2005, an external repair of the House of Soviets was carried out - it was painted, windows were inserted, and the building acquired a modern look.

However, at the present moment the future of the House of Soviets remains unknown. On November 30, 2011, the governor of the Kaliningrad region, Nikolai Tsukanov, called the House of Soviets "a disgrace to the city of Kaliningrad," which must be demolished. On the spot where the Royal Castle stood, there should be a Royal Castle.

While the city authorities do not intend to take into account the opinion that has emerged in society, since “the housing problem remains the main social problem of the population” and “it is necessary to increase the volume of construction of social housing, including temporary housing, social hotels, etc.”, the planned demolition of such a significant potential living space is extremely unethical and that it would be wiser to adapt the building to the needs of homeless Kaliningrad families.
