In 1956, Samarovo Airport was renamed Khanty-Mansiysk Airport. The airport of those years was in winter a prepared site for takeoff and landing of aircraft on the left bank of the Irtysh, and in summer, seaplanes made flights directly from the Irtysh river area. In 1967, in connection with the development of open oil and gas fields in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, it was decided to build a new airport in the city of Khanty-Mansiysk, in its northern part. In the early 1990s, the administration of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug decided to reconstruct the airport. The reconstruction project included the extension of the runway, the expansion of the apron, the repair of utilities, fuel depot, the construction of a new terminal. In 1997, a new artificial (asphalt-concrete) airstrip with a length of 2,800 m and a width of 45 m, with a high bearing capacity, suitable for receiving almost all types of aircraft, began operation. Since 2001, a new terminal complex has been commissioned. In 2004, Khanty-Mansiysk Airport received international status.
